Douglas Lake Comes Back to Life

April 17, 2026

One of the most unique aspects of staying at Wyldstay in the spring is watching Douglas Lake rise.

Each year, the Tennessee Valley Authority begins increasing water levels in March, gradually filling the lake to its full summer pool by late April or early May.

As the water rises, the landscape transforms:
  • Shorelines expand and shift
  • Docks begin to float again
  • Water activities like kayaking and paddleboarding become more accessible
  • The lake reflects the surrounding mountains in a way that feels calm and untouched

No two spring visits look exactly the same; it’s a season of constant, beautiful change.

Early in the season, you’ll find delicate trillium and spring beauties lining trails and wooded areas. As temperatures rise, dogwood trees and redbuds begin to bloom, adding soft whites and pinks throughout the landscape. By late spring, mountain laurel and rhododendron start preparing for their signature show. Even from your deck at WYLDSTAY, you’ll notice the mountains shifting week by week, while subtle at first, then bursting into full color.
